Let my heart make Jesus my anchor, my rudder, my lighthouse, my life-boat, and my harbor. Plus, Birds in Maui

The above phrase was taken from Morning and Evening by C.H. Spurgeon for the morning reading dated September 14.

I am reading 1 Kings now. The thoughts for today concerning:

1 Kings 1 - God's plan will happen no matter how we conspire to direct it ourselves.

1 Kings 2 - Wrong must always be accounted for; it is not forgotten and consequence free. Even believers are not free from consequences. We may have mercy extended to us as far as the severity of those consequences and the wrong we committed will never be held against us upon entrance into heaven, but we will have to deal with each thing we do. Enemies who lack penitence and fade out of sight are still enemies-Joab was one of those.

I was able to get a couple of photos

of Hawaiian Stilts at the beach and a Blackcrowned Night Heron at the run-off ditch–which I have –for three years – called blue heron. WRONG!

I love birds and am always happy to get a shot or two of any kind.

This Hawaiian Stilt had a partner just to the left but I liked the shadow on this shot.

September 9_09 2 Samuel 24 and Crown/Blizzard Book Gifts

2 Samuel 24 - Pride, confidence in your portion is displeasing to God. It is not about us, period.

Ahh, the end of 2 Samuel and the end of David’s life as well. Tomorrow I start 1 Kings.

Today I listened to John Piper’s sermon:

Personal Art News:

I purchased a little book making kit on Etsy.com from Green Chair Press: http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=71723.  It is for making Blizzard and Crown books.

I created a couple of little “Care Package Stuffers” with those instructions and my own papers. For the Crown bound book I used a piece of Kraft paper on which I painted an abstract design with liquid acrylic. I used cream colored drawing paper from Dick Blick for the pages then tucked a check into the front fold.

I turned the little blizzard books into “Backpack Charms” for my granddaughters. I thought they might like to draw tiny pictures or put favorite tiny stickers on the pages. These would make great pendants too. I designed a slip cover to make the slide-I got that idea from the book, Pockets, Pullouts, and Hiding Places. IT is connected with leather cord and beaded on waxed linen.

For this one, I used a piece of drawing paper which I painted for the binding. I then used a piece of vellum that I had previously printed a drawing on and then painted with Sparkling H2O’s (LOVE those little paints). It was going in the trash so I cut it up to make the book cover and slip case. I embellished it with a gold pen.  I am so glad I didn’t throw it out. The pages are Canson Drawing paper.

Book Pages

I am writing a little gospel picture book for my family. For the illustrations I used Black Somerset Velvet paper, gouache, colored pencil and gel pens. I have 4 pages left to illustrate then I scan and print them smaller to bind in a hand-made book. Here are a couple of the pages:

September 3_09 2 Samuel 22

I never have understood how David could say that God took care of him and rescued him because he was blameless. Considering all that he had done in his life. But I wonder if this verse gives a glimpse:

And the Lord has rewarded me according to my righteousness, according to my cleanness in his sight.
2 Samuel 22:25 (ESV) According to his cleanness in GOD’S sight???

However, David says that he was blameless before God and kept himself from guilt. I wonder if that word means righteous not blameless in the sense that he was innocent? This song is repeated or a repeat depending on which came first(?) of Psalm 18. Maybe David just means that he was fair to Saul and to Absalom and so on and did not act in an ungodly way toward his enemies. And maybe this is just about "what goes around, comes around." God's principles are the same in every age.

One way or the other, David gives all the glory and honor to God and he worships him in this song. I think it is important to me to see that this is a specific song of praise to God from David. It is not a promise to anyone else that all those things will be done for everyone. If that were true then the apostles would not have been tortured or killed as well as countless other Christian Martyrs throughout time. All the attributes of God in this song are true but this is not a promise to duplicate the manner in which David was completely physically saved from his enemies. I think that we believe that because God is:

  • merciful
  • longsuffering
  • powerful
  • compassionate
  • our salvation
  • a rock
  • a fortress
  • a deliverer
  • an all consuming fire
  • able to route lightning, open the channels of the sea and lay the foundations bare with the blast of the breath of his nostrils
  • create and lay bare with a Word

That He is obligated to use all those attributes every time we need help. I know I think that at times myself because I am frail and know with all my heart He is all of the above. He knows I am frail, so why wouldn't He do it all? I don't know the answer but I do know this:

"The Lord lives, and blessed be my rock, and exalted be my God, the rock of my salvation,
2 Samuel 22:47 (ESV)

And in the end, He will have been all that He is to my good and for His glory!

September - looking for joy this month!

September 2, 2009 2 Samuel 20, 21

Joab and his brother...always out for themselves and needing things to be equal. Why don't we hear of David being mad at Joab for killing Amasa?  At least Joab was fair with the woman who saved her city. And what courage she had too.

2 Samuel 21, why did it take three years for either David to seek the Lord about the famine or three years for God to answer?

I am angry about the seven sons being hanged. I think we really should think about the oaths we take. They are serious enough for it to be ok with God to make those families pay for the breaking of the oath.

Thankfully, David had compassion on the mother/aunt of the dead men.

What is up with the Philistines and their giants? Abisai, Joab's brother is mentioned as having killed one to save David as well as two more men and a nephew of David who killed giants. In —Jamieson-Fausset-Brown Bible Commentary [which is the only one I have - free:)] it says that the Philistines had the courage to taunt Israel when a giant was in the ranks.

I wondered how big these men were. It says that the sword of Ishbi-benob was about 7.5 pounds. Is that heavy?

Memory Verse:

Romans 1:16-20

For I am not ashamed of the gospel for it is the power of God for salvation, to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, " The righteous will live by faith." For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. For what can be know about God is plain to them because God has revealed it to them.

For His invisible attributes, namely his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.

August 24_09 2 Samuel 17

This story is good enough to watch at the theater. When I began reading this chapter, I thought of the parallel of Satan trying to destroy Jesus at the cross. Things like giving counsel through men like Ahithophel, gathering the people against the king and thinking that if only David was destroyed then it would all be business as usual.

Then the fact that Ahithophel hung himself made me think of the fact that he was David's Judas in a way. He started as his counselor, betrayed him and then hung himself. Interesting...

Why would it say that Absalom chose Amasa to be over the army instead of Joab? Joab was still loyal to David. At least there is not indication that he wasn't. Why wouldn't it just say that Absalom chose Amasa, who was a relative of Joab?

So it looks like Shobi was Joab's uncle and he and an Ammonite, a fellow from Lo-debar and a Gileadite brought provisions to David for all the people. God provided for them - again.
